He was the son of Harry Hurt and of Margaret Hurt of 5, Artillery Terrace, Retford, Nottinghamshire.
Wellington IC T2900 took off 2057 17 April 1941 from Honington. During the course of the next five hours a number of W/T signals were received the last being at 0058 when SOS was transmitted. No survivors. Fatalities:
Sergeant R D C Stark, Sergeant F W Baker, Sergeant J W Nightingale, Flight Sergeant G Gibb, Sergeant J E Johnson, Sergeant H Q Hurt.
Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Hur received official notification from the Royal Air Force Record Office, stating that in view of the lapse of time and absence of any news concerning their son, Sergeant Harry Franklin Hurt, since he was reported missing, it is feared there can now be no reasonable grounds for believing that he can still be alive.
It is now proposed to take official action to presume his death.
Sgt. Hurt was posted as missing in the early part of this 1941, when he was the rear gunner of an aircraft which proceeded to an objective in Germany.
An S.O.S. message was received from the aircraft when it was returning to England.
This stated that the aircraft was alighting on the water. A search was made and aircraft took off at dawn and carried out a wide search round where it was believed to have landed.
Unfortunately, the search was unsuccessful.
