Family history

Son of Fred and Elizabeth Spencer of 75 Smith Street, Mansfield. Fred had died in 1933.
Siblings: Phyliss (1910), Lucy (1911), Fred (1912-1916) and Leonard (1915).
In 1921 the family lived at 3 Chester Court, Mansfield.
John married Ellen Stokes of 214 New Victoria Street, Mansfield in Spring 1940, so married only about a year. They had no children and Ellen married Harold Gascoigne in 1948.

Military history

The 2 H.A.A. (heavy anti aircraft) were deployed to Eygpt in September 1940 and then sent Greece arriving on 7th march 1941. The Germans invaded Greece on 6th April and the Allied forces were forced to retreat and eventually an evacuation back to Egypt was ordered for the 29th April. John was killed sometime during the retreat and on CWGC site his date of death is shown has 26/4-27/4/1941.

Official news has been received by Mrs E Spencer, 214 New Victoria Street, Mansfield that her husband, Gunner J Spencer who was reporteed missing four years ago near Greece must now be persumed killed in action at sea. He served in the evacuation of Dunkirk. Prior to joining the army he was employed by Wilson's Ltd Fibrous Plasterers of Mansfield. He is the son of Mrs E and the late Mr Spencer of 75 Smith Street, Mansfield.
