He was a pilot aboard Whitley V P4965 took off from Abingdon to bomb the Fiat Aero Engine works. Badly shot up by a fighter attack over the target which left one engine out of action and severe damage to the starboard aileron.

The crew managed to fly the crippled bomber all the way back across France. However, while attempting a forced landing on the beach near Dymchurch in Kent, UK, the heavily damaged aileron broke off, causing the plane to plunge into the sea. While three of the crew successfully escaped and survived, Sergeant Campion and his co-pilot, Pilot Officer Ernest Ian Parsons, lost their lives.
