Military history

F/O J M G Browne was killed when Hurricane L1954 crashed at Metheringham landing ground on a night-flying practice sortie. It was the pilot's first experience of flying in blackout conditions on a very dark night. He lost sight of the flare-path and lost height rapidly without realising.

Extra information

He was the grandson of Michael Browne who founded the lace making company Dobsons and M. Browne & Co. Ltd., which made the 38 Battle of Britain Commemorative lace panels. (31 of which have been located including one in Southwell Minster).
