Thomas Hill was born in 1882 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Henry Hill and Sarah Ann Hill., born in 1860 in Arnold. She was a widow and worked as a lace dresser.
He had a sister May. born in 1894 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire and working as a lace dresser.
The family lived at 3 West Court, Mansfield Road, Nottingham before moving to 21 Milk Street, Glasshouse Street Nottingham.
His mother Sarah is 51 yrs and a widow, she is a lace dresser living with her son Thomas 29 yrs a brewery carter and May 17 yrs a lace dresser.
Thomas was the husband of Sarah Clarson (born 7th April 1887) they were married in 1912 at Nottingham. they lived at 1 Old Strret Place, St Ann' Well Road, Nottingham.
Commencing 25th February 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Thomas Hill enlisted on 4th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 35 yrs and 2 months, he was a coal miner, he stated he had previous militiary service with the Notts and Derbyshire Regiment, he was posted to the Sherwood Forsters Depot. However on 5th December 1914 he was dscharged from the Army as being not likely to become an efficient soldier.
Hill later volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment.
The battalion was involved in fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres. They held positions near the village of Westhoek which were heavily shelled prior to a German attack. Casualties were high and included Pte. Hill who was seriously wounded , and who died on 16/08/1917. He was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
