John Marshall was born in 1880 the son of James a frame work knitter and Sarah Rebecca Marshall née Scothorne.
James was born 1851 at Huthwaite, Sarah Rebecca Scothorne in 1854 at Kirkby in Ashfield. Married on 29th December 1872 at St Mary’s Church, Sutton in Ashfield, they went on to have 15 children 3 dying in infancy or early childhood.
In 1911, James, Sarah and six of their children lived on Fairfield Road, Sutton in Ashfield.
John married Mary Ann Allin (born 1885 at Sutton in Ashfield) on 31s May 1909 at St Mary’s Church Sutton in Ashfieldthey went on to have 3 children, Harry born 1910, Sarah Rebecca born 1912, Elizabeth born 1915 and
In 1911, they lived on Eastfield Side, Sutton in Ashfield John 30 yrs a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Mary Ann 26 yrs and their eleven month old son Harry .
Private John Marshall enlisted at Nottingham. he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was one of two men from the battalion killed on June 11th 1916 in trenches near Neuve Chapelle.
He is buried in Le Treport Military Cemetery, Plot 2 Row K Grave 7.
