James Albert Terry was born in 1896 at Staveley he was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Ada Terry, née Kirkham of 171, Curzon St., Netherfield, Nottingham.
James was born and spent almost half of his life in Staveley, Derbyshire before moving to Holmwood, Derbyshire sometime between 1905-08, and then on to Netherfield his father William was born in 1872 at New Whittington, his mother Ada Kirkham was born in 1876 at Eckington, they were married on 30th October 1883 at Staveley, they went on to have 9 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Compton Street, Holmewood, Chesterfield William Terry 39 yrs a coal miner hewer he is living with his wfie Ada 35 yrs and their children, James Albert 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Thomas 12 yrs, William 11 yrs, Richard 10 yrs, Robert 6 yrs, Herbert 3 yrs Annie 7 yrs and Ellen 7 months old.
Private James Terry enlisted at Clay Cross whilst residing at Netherfield, he served wit the 15th batalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 17th July 1916 in Fance, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 10C 10D and 11A, Somme, France.
