George William Holland was born in 1898 at Netherfield, he was the son of William Newcombe a railway engine driver and Maria Holland née Shearman , of 49, Dunstan St., Netherfield, Notts.
His father William was born in 1872 at Shelford, Nottinghamshire his mother Maria Shearman was born in 1872 in Lenton, they were married in 1890 at Billingborough, Lincoln they went on to have 6 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In 1901 the family were living at No 13 Meadow Cottages, Garnet Street, Netherfield
By 1911 the family, William Newcombe Holland 39 yrs a railway engine driver is living with his wife Maria and children Esther 15 yrs a cootn doubler, George 12 yrs a scholar , Phyllis 8 yrs and Arthur 1 year old were living at 79 Curzon street in Netherfield.
They had moved to 49 Dunstan Street by 1917 when George enlisted.
Private George William Holland enlisted at Nottingham aged 19 years and 1 month on the 10 July 1917. He served in England until 9 Dec 1917 then went to France on 10 Dec 1917. He was declared Missing on 21st March 1918. His body was not found so he is commemorated on the Arras memorial, in the Pas de Calais region of France. He was eligible for the Victory and British medals
