Samuel Gretton was born in 1894 at Carlton the son of Robert a coal carter and Elizabeth Gretton née Oldham, of Netherfield.
His father . Robert was born in 1860 at Bingham, his mother Elizabeth Oldham was born in 1860 at Carlton, they were married in 1880 at Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
in 1901 the family with three children were living on Main Street East at Carlton.
By the 1911 census they had moved to 5 Moor Street Netherfield. Robert 51 yrs is a coal carter he is living with his wife Elizabeth 51 yrs and their children, Alice 22 yrs a steam machinist, Robert 19 yrs a railway clerk and Samuel 17 yrs a lithographic printers assistant.
Private Samuel Gratton enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 7th service battalion South Staffordshire Regiment he first entered the war 11 September 1915 in the Balkans then went to France. He was killed in action on 27th July 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panels 35 and 7, He was eligible for the 1915 Star and the Victory and British medals
