Charles Burton was born in 1884 the son of Edgar a coal miner and Jane Burton née Lamb of New Westwood, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire.
Edgar was born in 1856 at Ambergate, Derbyshire, Jane Lamb in 1859 at Whaley, Derbyshire. Married in 1881 near Belper, they had six children, five surviving infancy - Amelia b.1883, Charles b.1884, Henry b.1885, Thomas b.1890 and Esther b.1901.
In 1911, the family was living at Westwood. Edgar 55 yrs a coal minor is living with his wife Jane 52 yrs and their children, Charles 27 yrs a coal miner, Henry 26 yrs a coal miner, Amelia 28 yrs Thomas 21 yrs made sanitary pipes and Esther 10 yrs of age.
Charles Burton enlisted 5th September 1914 he served with the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and first entred theatre (France) 19th May 1915. He was discharged in 1918 (13th September on some records, 14th December on others). He was awarded a Silver War Badge (491964). He was suffering from myalgia aggravated by military service (pension record).
He died on 29th March 1921 ans is buried at Westwood St Marys Churchyard Jacksdale.
Charles's brother Thomas Burton was killed in action 3rd September 1916.
