Family history

John James Kirk (junior) was born in 1892 at New Whittington, Derbyshire, he was the son of John James( senior0 a locomotive engine driver and Martha Ann Kirk nee Dean and the brother of George Henry, Fred, Mary Hannah and Edna Kirk of 42 Devonshire Road New Whittington Derbyshire..

His father John James (senior) was born in 1865 at New Whittington his mother Martha Ann Dean was born in 1868 at Attercliffe, Yorkshire, they were married on 1st July 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration distirict, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Devonshire, Avenue, Nw Whittington, John James (senior) 46 yrs is a locomotive engine driver, he is ligin wtih is wife Martha Ann 43 yrs and their children, John James 19 yrs a collliery labourer, George Henry 14 yrs a colliery pony driver, Fred 10 yrs, Mary Hannah 8 yrs and Edna 6 years old. 

John James Kirk (junior) married his wife Olive Waddoups (born 15th January 1894) in 1914 at Chesterfield, they had a son Jack born 23rd October 1914. 

Commencing 6th March 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week. 
Military history

Private John James Kirk enlisted at Chesterfield whilst residing at New Whittington, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters regiment, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915, in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey.Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
