Family history

Arthur Towndrow was born in 1891 at Ashover, Derbyhire, he was christened on 13th September 1891 at Ashover, he was the son of the late Edwin Towndrow a labourer and Alice Rachel Towndrow née Smedley.

His father Edwin was born in 1860 at Ashover, he died in 1894 aged 34 yrs, his mother Alice Rachel Smedley was born in 1861 at Swanwick, they were married on 28th April 1891 at Ashover, they had a further son Charles Edward Towndrow born 1894 at Milltown, Derbyshire

His mother went on to remarry Samul Turner a green grocer, they were married in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterifle registration district.

In the 1911 census his mother is living at Shirland, Alfreton with her 2nd husband, SamuelTurner 39 yrs a green grocer, she is 50 yrs of age, also living with them is a son Arthur Turner 10 yrs a scholar.

In the same 1911 census Arthur Towndrow has left the family home, he is living at Owl Coates Heath Chesterfield, he is 19 yrs and a general farm labourer, he is living with Robert Potts 31 yrs a farmer.

Military history

Private Arthur Towndrow enlisted at Chesterfield whilst residing at Mansfield, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Forsters Regiment, he died on 18th June 1917.
