Charles William Crawley was born on 3rd May1877 at Boston, Lincolnshire, he was the son of the late Charles Crawley a tailor and Mary Ann Crawley née Hornsby, of Boston.
His father Charles was born in 1846 at St Neots, he died in 1911 at Nottingham, he was 65 yrs old, his mother Mary Ann Hornsby was born in 1854 at Uffington, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1876 at Stamford, Lincolnshire. his siblings, both born at Boston, were Violet a pinafore machinist and Lillian a bookbinder.
Charles William married Rebecca Ann Myers was (born on 1st September 1882) they were married on 6th June 1904 at Fishtoft, Lincolnshire, they lived at 4 Dunkirk Road, Old Lenton they had the following children, Charles Henry born 15th March 1906, Reginald Albert 1st August 1911 and Frances Mary Rebbeca born 31st May 1915.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Belvoir Terrace, Bunbury Street, Nottinghm, Charles William 33 yrs is a tailor, he is living with his wife Rebecca Ann 28 yrs and their children, Charles Henry 5 yrs and his sisters Violet Crawley 21 yrs a pinafore sewing machinist and Lillian 18 yrs a Printers Bookbinder machinist.
Commencing 8th May 1916 his widow was awared a pension of 21 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Sergeant Charles William Crawley enlistied on 28th April 1908 at Nottingham giving his address as 14 Belvoir Terrace, Bunbury Street, Nottingham, he was 30 yrs and 11 months old, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, . He was promoted to Sergeant on 21st April 1913 and went to France on 28th February 1915.
He was awarded the D.C.M. London Gazette 9th October 1915: For conspicuous gallantry at Sanctuary Wood near Ypres on the night of 30th-31st July 1915, when, with the assistance of four others, he brought in over 20 wounded men of another Regiment and several of his own under artillery and rifle fire. These wounded men were lying out in front of a new trench which had been dug during the night. He was killed in action, 13th October 1915, aged 38, during the attack on Fosse 8 near Vermelles. his name was recorded on the Loos Memorial Panel 87 to 89.

Crawley was killed in action in Northern France on 13th October 1915, having served for 7 yrs and 169 days, but his body was never recovered. However, his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
