in 1891, Norris Hunt was a labourer (coal hand). In 1901, he was a leather hanger at Turney's where he continued to work until the outbreak of World War One

Family history

Norris Hunt (junior) was born on 26th August 1876 at Nottingham, he was the son of Norris Hunt (senior) a horse keeper and Henrietta Hunt née Calcraft and the brother of William, Gertrude, Herbert and Ethel Hunt. In 1881, the family lived at 42, Radford Road, Hyson Green and in 1891 at 2, Orange Street (both Nottingham).

His father Norris Hunt (senior) was born in 1846 at Coddington near Newark, he died in 1905 aged 59 yrs, his mother Henrietta Calcroft was born in 1848 at Newark, she died in 1916 aged 68 years, they were married on 21st July 1869 at Newark,

Norris (junior) married Emma Fearey (born 1877 at Little Hall, Lincoln, she died in 1913 aged 36 yrs,) at Nottingham in 1896 and they had two children - Edith born 1898 and Harold Hunt born 1899.

In 1901, they lived at 4, Berlin Terrace, Meadows, and in 1911 at 24, Hartford Street, Nottingham.

Military history

Private Norris Hunt enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Melton Mowbray, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd July 1916 having no knowm grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A

Bert Hunt, Norris Hunt's great nephew notes 'Norris and my grandfather Herbert Hunt were in the Robin Hood Rifles prior to the Great War. Norris's son Harold Hunt was wounded and gassed on the Somme in the same 17th Northern Division as his father, as he was serving with 12th Manchester Regiment. Herbert Hunt... was a sniper with the 5th Bn Leicestershire Regiment. William Norris Hunt served with the R.F.A. and they were fortunate enough to survive the war.'
