Oliver William Sissons was born on 12t October 1898 at Bonsall, he was baptised on 9th November 1898 at Bonsall parish church, he was the son of James a card grinder and the late Rose Sissons née Oliver of 50 Norton Street, Radford, Nottingham.

His father James was born in 1871 at Pleasley Hill, his mother Rose Oliver was born in 1875 at Bonsall, she died in 1910 aged 35 yrs they were married on 25th December 1893 at Bonsall parish church, they went on to have 8 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Beresford Street, Denman Street, Nottingham, James 40 yrs is a card grinder, he is living with his children, Dorothy 15 yrs a house keeper, Oliver 12 yrs a scholar, Florence 8 yrs a scholar, Emily 6 yrs and Alice 5 years of age.

His father went on to remarry Ages Ottwell in 1912 at Mansfield.

Military history

Private Oliver William Sissons enlisted at Nottingham whilst living at Radford, he initially served with the service number 31001 in the Leicestershire regiment, he was serving with the 2nd battalion Essex Regiment when he died of wounds on 8th November 1918, he is buried at Cambrai East Military Cemetery.
