Family history

William Martin was born in 1873 at Attercliffe, Sheffield, he was the husband of Eleanor Maude Ford (born 19th February 1882) and the step father of Edward born 1902 William born 19105 and George Ford born 1910.

In 1911, Eleanor and her three sons were living with her parents at 18, Pierrepont Street, Sneinton Road, Nottingham where William Martin was a lodger.

William and Eleanor married 20th Decmber 1913 and lived at 40, Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton whilst William was in the army. Eleanor later lived at 1, Bolton Yard, Manvers Street, Sneinton.

With effect from 12th April 1916 , Eleanor received a weekly pension of 23 shillings for herself and three children.

Military history

William Martin had served before the Great War (time expired) and re-enlisted at Nottingham 14/10/1914. giving his age as 42 rs and 273 days, he was a groom, He was promoted lance corporal 20/10/1914 and lance sergeant 18/9/1915. He was discharged 'no longer fit for military service' 28/3/1916 and died in Nottingham of cardiac failure on 11th April 1916.

Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 11/4/1917:

'Martin. In loving memory of my dear husband, Sergt. W. Martin, died April 11th 1916. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. Duty nobly done. Wife and children.'

Martin gave his age as 42 years 278 days upon enlistment in 1914 but the 1911 Census cites 42.
