James Leo Marriott was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of Job (John) a saw sharpener and Lucy Marriott née Massey and the brother of William, John, Harriet, Alice, Ernest and Agnes Marriott.
His father Job was born in 1856 at Mansfield his mother Lucy Massey was born in 1855 at Mansfield,they were married in 1873 and went on to have 11 children,
In the 1901 census the family lived at 9, Crocus Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census James Leo is living at 19 Preston Street, Bunbury Street, Meadows Nottingham, he is 18 yrs of age and a colliery horse keper below ground, he is living with his older brother William Marriott 37 yrs a wood turner and his wife and family, also living with him is a futher brother Ernest 21 yrs a public house waiter.
Private James Leo Marriott attested on 9th December 1915 at Maltby giving his address as 4 Hayhurst Crescent, Leslie Ave, Maltby, he was 22 yrs and 10 months old, he was a miner, his next of kin was his brother William Marriott, Bunbury Street, Nottingham, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 25th April 1918 at Pontefract, posted the following day to the West Yorkshire Regiment, he landed in France on 6th October 1918, he died of wounds on 21st October 1918 he is buried at Delsaux Frm Cemetery, Beugny, France.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 24/11/1918:
'Marriott. On October 21st 1918, died of wounds in France, Leo Marriott, youngest brother of W Marriott, aged 25 years. Silently mourned by all his brothers and sisters. RIP.'
