Herbert Claude Taylor was born in 1882 at Nottingham, was the son of Herbert Grenhalgh Taylor a commercial traveller and Emma Taylor née Fletcher 57, Hounds-Gate, Nottingham
His father Herbert was born in 1856 at Radford, his mother Emma Fletcher was born in 1862 at Brandbreak, Northfolk, they were married on 3rd November 1881 at St Thomas Church, Nottingham, they went onto a further child Percy born in 1891
In the 1911 census his mother Emma is living at 39 Needle Place, Wollaton Street, Nottingham she is 50 yrs and is married she is a lace worker she is living at the address on her own.
In the same 1911 census we find his father Henry Taylor 54 yrs a commercial agent is living at 9 Hinds Yard, Angel Row, Nottingham, he is living with his son Percy Taylor
At the time of his death Herbert Claude was living at 19 Seldon Place, Beaumont Street, Nottingham (Sherwood Foresters Regiment roll of honour website.)
His pension record card shows his unmarried wife to be Ethel Broomhead 19 Seldon Place, Beaumont Street, Nottingham who was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week commencing 12th February 1917.
Afurther pension card shows his father Herbert G Taylor living at 6 Northumberland Street, Nottingham and his unmarried wife Ethel Broomhead living at 53 Park Road, West Crossland Moor, Huddersfield.
Pte. Herbert Claude Taylor, enlisted at Harrogate, Yorkshire and served with the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 28th July 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
In memoriam published 28th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post : -
“TAYLOR. – In ever-loving memory of Private Claude Taylor, Sherwood Foresters, eldest son of Herbert and Emma Taylor, 57, Hounds-gate, killed in action July 28th, 1916. Gone, but not forgotten.”
