Family history

Clarence Richard Hind was born in 1897 at Nottingham he was the son of George a coal miner hewer and Louisa Hind née Berrington.

His father George was born in 1877 at Nottingham, his mother Louisa Berrington was born in 1877 at Bestwood, they were married in 1897 at Basford, they had 2 children their other son was Wilfred, born 1904 in South Africa

In 1901, the family lived at 43, Merchant Street, Bulwell, Nottingham with Clarences grandparents, Richard Hind 50 yrs a coal miner hewer and Mary Hind 54 yrs

In the 1911 census , the family are living at 17 St Albans Road, Bulwell, Clarence Richard Hind is 13 yrs of age a scholar is living with his mother Mary Hind 64 yrs married and his aunt Sarah Ann Talbot 38 yrs maried a lace mender.

The family emmigrated to South Africa on 2nd August 1902 G Hind, a miner, together with Mrs Hind and master Hind all sailed from East London (departure 2nd August 1902) to South Africa on the ship "Scot". Destination port: Ehouda.

The family returned to England on 29th July 1905 with a second son Wilfred however George Hind was not with the family.

The commonwealth wargraves website shows his mother to be Louisa Whatley (formerley Hind) of Witbank, Transval, South Africa and the late George Hind.

Military history

Private Clarence Richard Hind enlisted in South Africa, he served with the 1st Regiment South African Infantry, he died on 24th March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial,
