Family history

Lewis George Ellis was born in 1882 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a general labourer and his first wife Eliza Ann Ellis née Mansell and the brother of Gertrude, William, Lily and Edith Ellis.

His father William James George Ellis was born in in 1854 at St Giles, London, his mother Eliza Ann Mansell was born in 1855 at Nottingham, she died in 1895 aged 40 yrs,they were married on 28th December 1874 at St Peters Church, Nottingham they had 5 children.

In 1891, they lived at 15, Paddock Street, Greyfriar Gate, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census Lewis is living at Somercotes, Derbyshire he is a lodger 29 yrs single and is a colliery labourer he is living with Richard Richmond 32 yrs a coal miner hewere and his family.

In the same 1911 census his father George 57 yrs was living with his second wife Maude Plummer born 53 yrs born 1861 they were married on 25th May 1896. and his children, Lily 25 yrs a curtain overlooker, James 12 yrs a scholar.

Lewis George was the husband of Alice Widdowson whom he married on 10th May 1913 at Nottingham, the lived at 66 Coupland Place, Somercotes, they had a son Lewis George born 28th October 1915.

Commencing 2nd June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private Lewis George Ellis was called up for service on 15th May 1917 at Ilkeston, he reported to the Derby Depot on 17th May 1917, he was 35 yrs and 5 months he was residing at 66 Coupland Place, Somercotes, Derbyshire, he was a foreman banksman, his next of kin was his wife Eliza Maud of the same address, He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 10th August 1917 and posted to the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters on 27th August 1917. He was killed in action on 4th November 1918, he is buried at Valenciennes (St roch) communal cemetery, France.

'Ellis. Killed in action November 3rd (sic) 1918, Pte Lewis George Ellis. One of the best. Father, mother, sisters and brothers (in France)'.
