John Edward Tew was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Edmund Tew a tobaconist and newsagent, and Mary Ann Tew née Hodgett and the brother of Gertrude, Eliza and Dulcie Tew. In 1901, they lived at 32, Healey Street, Kirkwhite Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1852 at Brackley, Northhamptonshire, his mother Mary Ann Hodgett was born in 1855 at Lenton, Nottingham, they were married on 19th May 1877 at St Peters Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 16 Mayfield Grove, Nottingham William Edmund 59 yrs is a tobaconist and newsagent, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 56 yrs and their children, Gertrude May 32 yrs a confectionary packer and Dulcie 21 yrs a lace finisher.
John Edward was the husband of Millicent Grose (born 14th November 1882 Ilkeston) they were married on 17th February 1906 at St Marys Church, Ilkeston they went on to have the following children, John Eric born 29th April 1907, Stephen Edward born 1909 died 1915, Aileen born 21st February 1911, Mary born 22nd March 1913 and Janet born 31st August 1917.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 11, Little Hallam, Ilkeston John Edward 30 yrs is a carter and store keeper in an iron foundry, he is living with his wife Millicent 28 yrs and their children, Stephen Edward 2 yrs and Aileen 1 month old.
Commencing 8th April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 31 shillings and 3 pence a week.
Sergeant John Edward Tew enlisted at Ilkeston, he initially served with the service number 1409 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) later transferring to the 5th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France on 3rd March 1915 and died of wounds on 28th September 1917, he is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery Grave Reference: VI H 13
