Joseph Collins was an errand boy in 1901 who became a professional soldier in 1903. He was a general labourer in 1911.

Family history

Joseph Collins was born in 1885 at Wilton, Northamptonshire, he was the son of Eliza Collins and brother of William, Thomas, Alice and Fred Collins.

In 1901, they lived on Meadow Road, Colwick, Nottingham.

In 1911, Eliza, is living at 73, Colwick Vale,Nottingham, Eliza 66 yrs is a housekeeper she is living with her sons William 47 yrs a general labourer and Joseph 27 yrs a general labourer,

Joseph married Beatrice Middleton on 4th October 1913 at St Pauls Church, Carlton, and they had three childern Harold (1914), Alice (1917) and Gladys (1918). They lived at Netherfield.

Sarah Chapman, great granddaughter of Joseph Collins, writes 'My nan Alice, her sister Gladys and their mum, all worked at Bourne's Mill, in Netherfield for many years. Harold went on to join the merchant navy.'

Military history

He enlisted 12/11/1903 and, as a recalled reservist, arrived in France 15/8/1914. He was discharged wounded 30/4/1915 and died A/M/J/1919 (Basford District so presumably at home).

He died 28th May 1919
