Henry James Clift (junior) was born in 1881 at St Pancras, London, he was the son of Henry James Clift (senior) a shoeing smith at a colliery and Ann Eliza Hanson of London .

His fathe Henry James was born in 1858 at St Pancras, London he died in 1906 aged 48 yrs at Camberwell, London his mother Annie Eliza Hanson was born in in 1860 at Covent Garden, Westminster, they were married in 1878 at Westminster, they went on to have 7 children.

Henry James (junior) was the husband of Emma Glover (born 26th August 1888) they were married on 17th January 1903 at the Nottingham Registry Office, and the father of Henry William born 15th March 1903, , Rose born 24th June 1904 and Elsie Lilian 4th June 1906 and Nellie Clift born 1909

In 1911, they lived at 8, Gordon Terrace, Bosworth Road, Meadows, Nottingham.

Military history

Rifleman Henry James Clift enlisted on 16th November 1914, giving his address as 42 Kings Meadow Road, Nottingham, he was 35 yrs and 2 months old, he was a window cleaner his next of kin was his wife of the same address and later 14 Crocus Street, Nottingham, he was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and attended their depot at Winchester on 19th November 1914. He landed in France on 8th October 1915, he was wounded a gun shot wound to his thigh on 24th July 1916, he was returned to England on 26th July 1916.
He recovered from his wounds and returned to France on26th September 1916. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial Panels 61 to 64
