Family history

William Finney was born in 1889 at Ilkeston, he was the son of William Fred a shop keeper and the late Tryphena Stafford Finney née Hammond of 45 Alfred Street, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1858 at Kingswinford, Staffordshire, his mother Tryphena Stafford Hammond was born in 1865 also at Kingswinford, she died in 1916 aged 51 yrs, they were married on 29th November 1880 at St Thomas Church Sheffield they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family is living at 45 Alfred Street, Nottingham, William 43 yrs is ashop keeper, he is living with his wife Tryphena 46 yrs and their children, Agnes 23 yrs a hosiery machinist, Albert 19 yrs a collier, Harriett 15yrs a blouse hand and Martha 13 yrs of age.

Alfred married Sarah Elizabeth Gregory Bland (born 1889) on 15th January 1910 at St Marys Church, Ilkeston, they had 2 children they lived at 56, Marple Street Nottingham.

Military history

Private William Finney enlisted during November 1914 at Ilkeston and served initially with the Sherwood Foresters with the service number 18596, he later served with the 11th battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusilier, he was killed in action on 16th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cit Memorial
