Family history

Enoch Bardill Johnson was born in 1888 at Ilkeston, he was the son of the late Robert Henry Johnson a boot maker and repairer, and the late Mary Ann Johnson née Syson of 20 Church Street, Ilkeston.

His father Robert Henry was born in 1846 at Cotmanhay, he died in 1909 aged 63 yrs, his mother Mary Ann Syson was born in 1845 a Cossall,she died in in 1917 aged 72 yrs, they were married on 31st January 1869 at Cotmanhay, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

Enoch Bardill married Elizabeth Price (born 28th November 1887 at Ilkeston ) on 9th December 1914 at Ilkeston, they lived at 40 Prince Street, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston, they had the following children, Edna May born 13th August 1908, Joseph Leonard born 21st November 1910, Violet Anne born 8th May 1913 and George Henry born 1916.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 50 Gedling Grove, Arnold, Nottinghamshire, Enoch is 23 yrs and is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 24 yrs and their children, Edna May 2 yrs and Joseph 4 months old.

Commencin 24th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings and 6 pence a week

Military history

Bombardier Enoch Bardill Johnson enlisted on 9th December 1914 at Ilkeston, giving hs address as 16 Bridge Street, Ilkston, his age was 21 yrs and 3 months he was a collier, he was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery, 66th Siege Bty. He died of wounds on 5th June 1917 and is buried at Berks Cemetery Extension Grave Reference: III A 22
