William Henry Blades was born on the 15th September 1895 baptised 10th October 1895 at 14 Windermere Street, Gateshead. The eldest and only son of two children to Henry Blades,he was a locomotive checker, born November 1865, baptised 2nd April 1866, died 1940, and his wife Mary Ellen nee Thompson, born February 1861, at Willington Quay, died 17th June 1940, Henry and Mary were married in 1892. they lived at 14, Windermere Street Gateshead, Co. Durham.
They had a furher child Hilda Blades, born 14th January 1902, died 1996. She married John T Sanderson, born 17th March 1900, died 1975, in 1929, and had three children, Ellen Lait, born 29th April 1932, died 1988, David Henry Sanderson, born 7th January 1938, died 2001 and one other unidentified. In 1939, they were residing at 106 Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 14 Windermere Street, Gateshead, Henry 45 yrs is a locomotive inspector, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 50 yrs William Henry 15 yrs a scholar and Hilda 9yrs also living with the family is Ann Thompson 46 yrs single (wifes sister)
William enlisted into the Honourable Artillery Company on the 4th August 1915, with the service number 4130. He was posted to the 3rd Battalion. William was in a Cadet School. Sent to France on the 29th November 1915 with āCā Company, 1st Battalion. William was in the 13th Draft, and joined the Battalion in the field on the 18th December 1915. He was gazetted 16th February 1917 as a temporary 2nd Lieutenant. He was posted as being wounded and missing on the 3rd May 1917 and finally confirmed as being killed in action on the 22nd December 1918, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 9
