Ernest Daykin was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Emma Daykin and the brother of William Daykin.
In 1901 they lived at 2, Albion Square, Greyfriar Gate, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census, Ernest is a lodger living at 68 Pierpoint Street, Nottingham, he is shown as being 16 yrs and a printers apprentice he is living with his mother Emma 55 yrs a widowed lace hand, they are living with Arthur Scothern 58 yrs a framwork knitter and his family.
Private Ernest Daykin enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Wst Yorkshire Regiment, he landed in France on 13th July 1915, he was killed in action on 14th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, Somme.
His brother Lance Corporal William Daykin enlisted on 12th June 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 31 yrs and 6 months, he was an iron worker and married. Posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was mobilised for war on 8th September 1915 at Nottingham and landed in France on 6th March 1916. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 18th April 1916 he was killed in action on 29th June 1916 and is buried at Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue
