John Henry Jarratt was born in 1886 at Nottingham, he lived at 4, Sabina Road, Alfred Street South with family members before emigration to the USA in June 1911.

His parents George a frame wrok knitter was born in 1856 at Loughborough, his mother Mary Ann Priestly was born in 1859 also at Loughborough, they were married in 1880 at Loughborough, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to died in infancy or early childhood. and Mary Jarratt lived at 'Glen Maye', Conway Road, Carlton Nottingham.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at 26 Curzon Street, Carlton Hill, Nottingham, George 54yrs is a frame work knitter he is living with his wife Mary Ann52 yrs and their children Elizabeth 23 yrs a blouse cutter, Arthur 20 yrs a motor dealer clerk, Sidney 13 yrs a motor dealer clerk and Maggie 10 yrs of age.

John Henry emigrated to NewYork on 6th June 1911 Leaving the port of Liverpool.

Military history

Private John Henry Jarratt enlisted on 14th June 1917 and served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards he landed in France on 17th March 1918 and was killed in action on 5th April 1918. He is buried at Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux Grave Reference: III K 9

Extra information

John Henry Jarratt's great, great nephew Alistair Jarratt notes: 'John enlisted in New York Jul '17, sent to France Mar '18 and killed on 5th Apr '18: in France for 15 days. As living in New York he is not remembered on any UK war memorial. It would be fitting to add him to a memorial in St Ann's.'
