Joseph Henley was born on 11th July 1884 in York he was the son of the late William a farmer and Mary Henley née Trippit .

His father William was born in 1852 at Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, he died in aged 52 yrs his mother Mary Trippitt was born in 1862 at Heworth, Yorkshire, they were married in 1879 at York, they went on to have 15 Children.

Joseph married on 4th April 1914 at Stonebroom, Derbyshire to Sarah Jane Parry (born 29th June 1893) they lived at 449 Stonebroom, Alfreton, Derbyshire

Commencing 17th September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 16 shillings and 3 pence a week.

Military history

Sergeant Joseph Henley enlisted at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and was awarded the M.M. (Military Medal) London Gazette 26th April 1917, “For conspicuous gallantry at La Brayelle Farm, near Essarts, on 4th March 1917 when he did splendid work in holding his post against a strong enemy bombing attack, until eventually wounded in the head, dying the next day”.

He died of wounds, 5th March 1917, at No. 20 Casualty Clearing Station, Warlincourt, France.
