Family history

William Upton was born in 1888 at Kimberley, Nottingham, he was the son of Samuel a coal miner loader,and Frances Upton née Dawson and the brother of Elizabeth, Agnes, Thomas, Henry, Matthew and Lily Upton.

His father Samuel had married Jane Ann Howson (born 1849 Greasley died 1871 aged 22 yrs,) they were married in 1865 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration distrit, they had a son Henry born 1870 died 1876.

His father Samuel was born in 1849 at Burton upon Trent,he died in 1913 aged aged 64 yrs his mother Frances Dawson was born in 1855 at New Brighton, Cheshire, married on 24th December 1873 at Normanton All Saints Church, Yorkshire they went to have 6 children.

In 1901 they lived at 143 The Alley (later Hardy Street) Kimberley Nottinghamshire.

In the 1911 census William has left the family home, he is boarding at boarding at 19 The Park Woodlands near Doncaster he is shown as being William Upton 23 yrs a coal miner, he is living with Thomas Haywood 27 yrs also a coal miner.

Military history

Lance Corporal William Upton enlisted at Doncaster , he served with the 11th battalion The Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France 28th June 1915. Died on 22nd September 1917, age 29.

Commemorated : Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A.
