Family history

John George William Goodwin was born on 15th May 1895 at Kimberley he was baptised on 14th July 1895 at Holy Trinity Churh, Kimberley he was the son of Samuel Goodwin a colliery shunter and Maria Goodwin née Herring and the brother of James Goodwin of 13 Severn Street Commercial Road Bulwell Nottingham.

His father Samuel was born in 1866 his mother Maria Herring was born in 1867 they were both born in Kimberley they were married on 28th March 1891 at Holy Trinity Church, Kimberley they went on to have 5 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Dove Street, Bulwell, Samuel 45 yrs a colliery shunter he is living with hios wife Maria 44 yrs and their children George 15 yrs a post office messenger boy, Ernest 8 yrs a scholar, and Connie 2 yrs of age.

Military history

Rifleman John George William Goodwin enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he died of wounds on 30th July 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 51 & 53
