Family history

John Wood was born in 1885 at Nottingham the son of George Henry, a foreman bottler and Sarah Ann Wood née Leesson

His father George was born in 1853 in Nottingham his mother Sarah Ann Leeson was born in 1856 at Nottingham, they were married on 14th June 1874 at St Pauls Church, Nottingham, they had 16 children sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood,

By the 1911 census the family were living at 18 Shaw Street, Oldham, George Wood 58 yrs is a foreman bottler, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 55 yrs and their children, Bertie Arthur 21 yrs a bottler, Albert Edward 19 yrs Mabel Wood 14 yrs and Maud Beatrice 12 yrs,

Military history

Corporal John Wood enlisted at Darlington on 27th February 1905 aged 18 and served with the 2nd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps in India between 8th January 1907 and 5th March 1913, being promoted to Corporal on 1st August 1912. He landed in France on 13th August 1914 and died of enteric fever at No.3 General Hospital, St. Nazaire. He is buried in St. Nazaire (Toutes-Aides) Cemetery, Grave Reference: B.30.

His brother Private 987 Bertie Arthur Wood served with the 1/10th battalion Manchester Regiment, he was killed in action on 4th June 1915 at Galipoli his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial Galipoli, Turkey
