Samuel Newman was born in 1897 the son of Alfred a bricklayer’s labourer and Mary Ann Newman (née Reynolds). His father was born in 1864 at Nottingham, his mother in 1863 in Lincolnshire. Married in 1885, they had thirteen children, seven surviving infancy amongst whom were Alfred b.1895, Sam b.1897, William b.1900, George b.1893 and Ernie b1908. In 1911 census the family was living at 16 Thoresby Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. Alfred and Mary Ann later lived at 6 Arrow Terrace, Fisher Gate, Nottingham.
He enlisted at Nottingham.
He was killed on 20 September 1917. His body was recovered after the Armistice and buried in the newly made Zantvoorde British Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref. II.C.3).
CWGC History of Zantvoorde British Cemetery: the Cemetery is 8km from the town of Ieper [Ypres]. 'On 30 October 1914The village of Zantvoorde (now Zandvoorde) was held by the 1st and 2nd Life Guards, numbering between 300 and 400 men. It was bombarded for over an hour with heavy guns and then taken by the 39th German Division and three attached battalions. The whole front of the 3rd Cavalry Division was driven back to the Klein-Zillebeke ridge. The village could not be retaken and remained in German hands until 28 September 1918 ... The Cemetery was made after the Armistice when remains were brought in from the battlefields and nearby German cemeteries.' (www.cwgc.org)
Samuel’s younger brother, 123987 Private William Henry Newman, enlisted on 8 August 1918 and served with the 51st (Young Soldier) Battalion Notts & Derby Regiment. He served in France from March 1919, then Germany before being posted to Ireland on 2 September 1919. He was shot by Irish Nationalists on 28 February 1920 and admitted to the Military Hospital, Queenstown, where he died the following day, 29 February. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery. Their older brother Private Alfred Newman, 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, was invalided out 18 September 1916 after receiving a disabling gunshot wound in the back.
