Family history

Herbert O’Dell was born in 1890 the son of David a goods porter on the Midland Railways and Sarah Ann O’Dell (née Thorpe).

His father was born in 1850 in Bengeo, Hertfordshire, his mother in 1856 in Navenby, Lincolnshire. Married in 1880, they had nine children. Herbert’s siblings surviving infancy were Leonard b.1884, Bertha b.1886, Rosa b.1887, Arthur b.1891 and Fred b.1894.

In 1911 they lived at 27 Rupert Street, Meadows, Nottingham. Bertha was a blouse machinist, Arthur worked in the lace industry and Fred was a pit pony driver. David and Sarah later lived at 105 Rupert Street.

Military history

Herbert O'Dell enlisted at Nottingham and initially served (43725) in the Sherwood Foresters . He was serving with the Royal Irish Rifles when killed in action on 14th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Panel 40
