Family history

John William Ward was born on 4th April 1893 at St Ives, he was baptised 28th May 1893 at St Ann's, Nottingham, he was the son of Walter John a carter and Priscilla Ward née Freeman of 9 Bathley Terrace Meadows Nottingham.

His father Walter John was born in 1865 at Great Hale, Lincolnshire, his mother Priscilla Freeman was born in 1864 at Nottingham, they were married on 2nd October 1890 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 25 Gordon Road, St Anns, Nottingham, Walter John 46 yrs is a carter, he is living with his wife Priscilla 47 yrs and their children, John William 17 yrs a screw cutter, Walter George 16 yrs a van lad, Winifred Ivy 15 yrs a plain net doubler, Gertrude Rose 13 yrs a scholar and Bernard 6 yrs.

Military history

Private John William Ward enlisted on 23rd July 1915 at Toronto, Canada, giving his occupation as a farmer, his next of kin was his mother Priscilla of 13 Goirdon Road, St Anns, he was posted to the 14th battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action on 8th April 1916 and is buried at Lijjsenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium
