Family history

Arthur Hallgarth Stockwell was born on 9th April 1880 at Sproxton near Melton Mowbray, He was the sixth son of the late Henry a farmer and the late Elizabeth Stockwell née Bonser of Sproxton Manor, Sproxton, Leicestershire.

His father Henry Stockwell was born in 1831 at Redmile, Leicestershire, he died in 1894 at Sproxton, he was 63 yrs of age, his mother Elizabeth Bonser was born in 1840 at Barkstone, Melton Mowbray, she died in 1886 at Melton Mowbray she was 46 yrs, they were married on 23rd October 1860 their marriage was recorded in the Bngham Registration district, they went on to have 10 children.

Arhur was the husband of Mabel Annie Stockwell nee Sandbrook of 9 Stratford Road West Bridgford Nottingham whom he married on 24th March 1916 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Musters Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham.

Arthur Hallgarth Stockwell emigrated to Canada arriving on 23rd April 1904 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Military history

Private Arthur Halgarth Stockwell enlisted on 5th July 1915 in Canada and embarked from Halifax, Canada, on 21st October 1915 and disembarked Devonport on 30th October 1915.

He landed in France on 17th June 1916 and was killed in action between 4th & 7th September 1916. (Canadian ASR). He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.

Pte. Arthur Hallgath Stockwell, 46th Canadian Infantry Battalion, married Mabel Annie Sandbrook on 24th March 1916.

Stockwell, 46th Battalion Canadians, sixth son of the late Henry Stockwell, Sproxton Manor, Leicestershire, to Mabel Annie, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Sandbrook, 9, Stratford-road, West Bridgford.”
