John Herbert Price was born on 4th April 1891 at Ruddington ,he was baptised on 8th October 1893 at St Peters Church, Ruddington along with his brother Alftred Thomas, he was the son of Alfred a proffesional cricketer and Mary Price née Lawson and the brother of sarah and Annie Price.
His father Alfred Price was born in 1862 at Ruddington his mother Mary Jane Lawson was born in 1866 at Algburth, Lancashire, they were married in 1888 at West Derby, Lancashire, they had 5 children, Nellie born 1888, Harold Walter born 1890, John born 1891, Alfred Thomas born 1893 and Annie born 1898
In 1901, they lived on Charles Street, Ruddington. Alfred and Mary later moved to 143 Balfour Street, Oldham.
In the 1911 census John Herbert Price 19 yrs a junior clerk he is living at 19 Portland Grove, Fallowfield, Manchester with his uncle and aunt, George Street, 43 yrs a domestic chauffer and Lucy Street, 45 yrs and their son George Walter Street 13 yrs a scholar, also living at the address is his brother Alfred Thomas Price 17 yrs a junior clark and his sister Annie Lawson Price 13 yrs a scholar.
He emigrated to Canada prior to the start of the 'Great War'
John Herbert Price enlisted on 29th October 1914, at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he was 23 yrs and 9 months old, he was a foreman, his next of kin was his father Alfred of 23 Osmand Street, Oldham, England, he was a Private upon enlistment he served with the 27th Manitoba Regiment Canadian Infantry he sailed from Quebec on 17th May 1915 and was promted to Tempory Lieutenat on 28th April 1917. he was killed in action on 11th August 1917 aged 26 yrs he is buried in Fosse No. 10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-en-Gohelle Grave Reference: II D 29
Obituary 20th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post: “PRICE. – Killed in action, August 11th, 1917, Lieutenant Jack H. Price, Canadians, late of Ruddington. A noble life sacrificed. – Hilda.”
