Harry Parkes was born on 1st July 1890 at Wolverhampton he was the son of Henry Stratford a motor fitter and Jane Parkes née Gell of 7 Myrtle Grove, Beeston, Nottingham,

His father Henry was born in 1862 at Wolverhampton, his mother Jane Gell was born in 1865 at Princes End Staffordshire, they were married in 1890 at Wolverhampton, they had a further son Henry Stafford Parkes born 1891 at Wolverhampton.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Myrtle Grove, Beeston, Henry 49 yrs is a motor fitter, he is living with his wife Jane Parkes 46 yrs and their son Harry Parkes 20 yrs an electrical engineer at a telephone works.

He was the husband of Gladys Parkes and they had lived at Beeston Nottingham.

He emigrated to Canada with his wife prior ro to the outbreak of the Great War,

Military history

Private Harry Parkes enlisted on 15th December 1914 at Winnipeg, Canada, giving his date of birth as 1 st July 1890, he was 24 yrs and 5 months old, he stated his next of kin was his wife Gladys Parkes of La Riviere, Manitoba, he was a mechanic,he stated he had previously served with the 6th battalion Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. He served with the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry, he was killed in action on 7th October 1916 his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.
