Family history

Horace Arnold Mace was born in 1901 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Amos a foreman engineer and Lucy Mace née Taylor and the brother of Lucy, John Charles and Herbert Mace.

His father John Amos was born in 1886 at Lincoln, his mother Lucy Taylor was born in 1872 at Tuxford, they were married in 1893 at East Retford, they had 5 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 74, Caroline Street, Peas Hill Road, St Ann's Nottingham John Amos 45 yrs is a foreman engineer, he is living with his wife Lucy 39 yrs and their children, John Charles 17 yrs a clerk, Herbert 13 yrs a scholar and Horace Arnold 10 yrs a scholar. Nottingham.

Military history

Private Horace Arnold Mace enlisted on 29th May 1917 at Nottingham, giving his age as 17 yrs and 313 days, he was living at 8 Eastville Street, Nottingham, he was a clerk, his next of kin was his father John Amos Mace of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 21st August 1917 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment on 8th December 1917 and landed in France on 30th July 1918. He was killed in action on 24th April 1918 and is buried at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers Bretonneux.
