George Henry Meats was born in 1878 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 31st February 1878 at All Hallows Church, Gedling he was the son of George a railway engine driver and Georgina Maria Meats née Bird and the brother of Tom, Emma, Eliza, Georgina and Isabella Meats of 152 colwick Road, Nottingham.
His father George was born in 1849 at Nottingham, his mother Georgina Maria Bird was born in 1850 at Gedling, they were married on 27th March 1877 at Gedling they went on to have 6 children.
In 1881 they lived on Curzon Road Carlton and in 1891 at 4 Balmoral Terrace Colwick (both Nottingham).
In the 1911 census his parents are living at 38 Ena Avenue, Sneinton Dale Nottngham, George 62 yrs is a retired railway engine driver, he is living with his wife Georgina 61 yrs and their chidren, Emma Maria 28 yrs a hosiery worker, Georgina 24 yrs a lace hand and Isabel Ann 21 yrs a hosiery cutter.
George Henry married Sophia Dearnley (born 1878 Batley, Yorkshire) whom he married in 1902 at Batley, Yorkshre they had a daughter Florence May who was born 1902 and died in 1902.
George Henry and his wife Sophia emmigrated to Canada arriving at Quebec on 29th July 1910 they lived at 546 Alywna Street, Montreal.
Following his death his wife Sophia Meats lived at 565 Lycaste Avenue Detroit Michigan USA.
Sapper George Henry Meats enlisted on 16th March 1915 at Montreal, he was a clerk, giving his age as 37 yrs and 2 months his address was 546 Alywna Street, Montrea .He was posted to the 3rd Signal Coy, Canadian Engineers. He died of wounds on 25th September 1916 at No 13 General Hospital, Boulogne and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
