Family history

James Richard Dunn was born on 13th June 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of Edward a lace machinist worker and the late Sarah Ann Dunn née Simpson of Burgess Terrace, Clarence Street, Carlton Road, Sneinton.

His father Edward was born in 1854 at Barnstable, Devon, his mother Sarah Ann Simpson was born in 1852 at Nottingham 9she died prior to the 1911 census, they were married on 25th December 1873 at Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census he lived with his father and father sister Clara Dunn and Kate Simpson at 1 Burgess Terrace Clarence Street Carlton Road Sneinton Nottingham Edward 57yrs is a lace machine worker he is a widow, he is living with James Richard Dunn 23 yrs a railway servant and Clara Dunn 21 yrs a blouse machinist and Kate Simpson 41 yrs no occupation listed.

Military history

Private James Richard Dunn enlisted on 20th July 1915 at St Thomas Canada giving his date of birth as 13th June 1887 at Radford, Nottingham, he was 28 yrs of age and was a railrood worker, his next of kin was his sister Bertha Bentley of Stanley Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham, England. He was posted to the 4th battalion Mounted Infantry, Canadian Forces. He was killed in actio on 30th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.
