Ben Cooper was born in 1888 at Carlton, Nottingham, he was the son of the late Israel Cooper an engineer and Jane Cooper née Oakes of 8 Hawksworth Street Sneinton Nottingham.
His father Israel was born in 1843 at Hasland, Derbyshire, he died in 1894 aged 51 yrs, his mother Jane Oaks was born in 1846 at Tod Bank, Worcestershire, they were married on 11th December 1865 at Christ Church, Quinton, Worcestershire, they went on to have 7 children.
Ben Cooper left england from Liverpoll on 11th January 1906 to emigrate to Halifax Canada on board the ship S.S Corinthian.
Private Ben Cooper enlisted on 4th May 1916 at Winnipeg, giving his address as the St James Hotel, Logan Avenue, Winnipeg, he gave his age as 32 yrs and 7 months and his occupation as that of a moulder, his next of kin was his mother Jane Cooper of 8 Hawkesworth Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. He was posted to the 27th battalion Manitoba Canadain Infantry. He was killed in action on 6th November 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
