Herbert Arthur Browne was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Nathaniel Browne a lace curtain maker, and Sarah Elizabeth Browne née Catton of Nottingham.
His father Nathaniel was born in 1875 at Nottingham, he died in 1904 aged 29 yrs , his mother Sarah Elizabeth Catton was born in 1875 at Nottingham , they were married in 1893 at Nottingham, they had a further child Elizabeth Julia born 1894 at Radford,Nottingham.
In the 1911 census they lived with Sarah's parents at Lock House, Canal Side Nottingham. Sarah Elizabeth 35 yrs is a widow and a blouse hand, she is living with her two children, Elizabeth Julia 17 yrs working in the lace trade and Herbert Arthru 15 yrs a plumbers apprentice.
At some point prior to the outbreak of 'The Great War' Hebrert emigrated to Australia
PrivatHerbert Arthur Browne enlisted in Australi he served with 21st Bn 'C' Coy Australian Infantry, The unit embarked from Melbourne 10th May 1915, aboard HMAT A38 Ulysses.
He was killed in action on 5th October 1918, he is buried at Bullecourt British Cemetery Grave Reference: VI T 4
