Edwin Robert Carter was born on 10th August 1892 at Nottingham, he was the son the late Samuel Robert Carter a general furniture dealer and Mary Carter née Gillott.
His father Samuel Robert was born in 1865 at Nottingham he died in 1901 at Nottingham he was 36 yrs old, his mother Mary Gillott was born in 1864 at Nottingham,they were married on 6th August 1883 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they had a further child Sarah Ann Carter born 1887.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Hollow Stone Nottingham. his mtoher Mary Carter is a widow she is 46 yrs of age and is a charwoman, she is living with her son Edwin Robert Carter 18 yrs single a lace warehouse man.

In 1916 he enlisted at Vancouver.
Private Edwin Robert Carter enlisted at Vancouver on 2nd December 1916 giving his age as 24 yrs, he was a warehouse man his next of kin was his mother Mary Carter of 2 Howard Place, Howard Strret, Nottingham. He was posted to the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion he died of wounds on 5th November 1917 he is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France. Grave Reference: VI G 6A
