Herbert Edward Spurr was born in 1894 at West Leake he was the son of James a farm labourer and Sarah Spurr née Mason, of Ratcliffe on Soar.
His father James was born in 1862 at Gaddesby, Leicestershire, his mother Sarah Mason was born in 1861 at Normaton, Leicestershire, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Ashby De La Zouch registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his family are living at Ratcllife on Trent, James 49 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Rebecca 50 yrs and their son Herbert Edward 16 yrs an assistant in a chemical laboratory .
Herbert Edward married Ann Champ (born 1891) in 1914 at Hendon, Middlesex, they had 2 children, Herbert James Joseph born 27th December 1914 and Phyllis Anne born 18th August 1917.
Herbert Edward Spurr emigrated to Australia before the outbreak of war.
Private Herbert Edward Spurr enlisted on 1st December 1917 in Australia and served with the 19th battalion Australian Infantry, he died on 11th August 1918 and is buried at Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France.
