Charles Hurt was born on 25th August 1890 at Watnall he was baptised on 2nd November 1890 at St Mary's Churh, Greasley he was the son of the late Charles a blacksmith and Susan Hunt née Morley (later Wain) of Watnall.
His father Charles was born in 1848 at Nottingham, he died in 1907 at Nuthall he was 59 yrs old, his mother Susan Morley was born in 1851 at Southwell, they were married on 24th December 1871 at St James Church (Leenside) Nottingham they went on to have 9 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Severn Street, Quarry Road, Bulwell Susan (Sussannah) 60 yrs a widow and house keeper is living with 2 of her sons Harry 39 yrs a coal miner loader and Harry 20 yrs a coal miner banksman.
He emigrated to Australia beofre the 'Great War'
Charles Hurt enlisted 12th October 1915 at Lismore, Australia giving his employment as a railway employee a fettler giving his mother Susan still living in England as his next of kin. He was posted to the 26th battalian Australian Infnatry. His unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A16 Star of Victoria on 30 March 1916.
Early in August 1916, he was wounded in action, with ‘shell shock’. He was conveyed by the Ambulance Train to the No. 1 Canadian General Hospital, and then to No. 6 Convalescent Depot before re-joining his unit on 21st August.
He was killed in action on 5th November 1916. He has no known grave. He is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Picardie, France.
