Family history

Harry Betts was born in 1895 at Maxstoke, Warrington, he was the son of the late William a platelayer and Mary Ann Betts née Pegg (later Congreave) of 82 Pym Street Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1866 at Fillingley, Warwickshire he died in 1915 he was 49 yrs old, his mother Mary Ann Pegg was born in 1866 at Packington, Warwickshire, they were married on 7th March 1882 at Little Packington, Warwickshire, they went on to have 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Station Cottages, Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, William 45 yrs is a platelayer for the Midland Railways, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 45 yrs and their children, Samuel John a general labourer, Harry 16 yrs a labourer in a cotton factory, George 13 yrs a scholar and Frank 10 yrs a scholar.

At some point prior to the outbreak of the 'Great War' Harry emigrated to Australia where he enlisted int to Australian, Army

Military history

Private Harry Betts enlisted on 7th October 1914 at Melbourne, Victoia, Australia, giving his age as 19 yrs and 10 months, he was a labourer, he was posted to the 8th battalion Australian Infantry. He left Australia on 5th April 1915 on the Troop Ship, Clan McGillivray arriving at Lemnos Island on 11th April, and spent 20 days an Anchor at Mudros, they landed at Anzac Cove on 24th April 1915. He was killed in action on 8th May 1915 at Gallipoli, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli
