Archibald Douglas Bennett was born on 24th May 1888 at Windsor, Berkshire he was the son of Frank an army pensioner and Louisa Bennett,née Blundell of 24 Ladybrook Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

His father Franks was born in 1861 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Louisa Blundell was born in 1864 at Linslade, Buckinghamshire, they were married on 6th April 1885 at St Pauls Church, Clapham, they went on to have 8 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Ladybrook Lane, Mansfield, Frank 50 yrs is an army pensioner he is living with his wife Louisa 47 yrs and their 8 children, including Archibald Douglas 22 yrs a joiner and Frank 20 yrs a colliery labourer and their 6 other children.

Military history

Bombadier Archibald Douglas (Andy) Bennett enlisted on 21st October 1914 at Melbourne, Australia as Andrew Bennett. he was 25 yrs and 9 months, he was a carpenter and joiner, he was living at Brunswick, Moreland, Victoria, his next of kin his father F Bennett of 28 Rosemary Street Mansfield. Aged 25. He was posted to the 2nd battalion Field Artillery, He embarked on 2nd February 1915 from Melbourne on SS Hessen, he was transferred on 24th January to the 5th battery, 2nd Brigade, Australian Filed Artillery. He was killed in action on 31st July 1917, he is buried at Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium

Australian War Memorial information: Witness accounts of Archibald's death and burial:
31st July 1917 near Zillebeke B. Killed intantaneously by a shell. I helped to bury him in the cemetery at Renninghurst: informant was Gunner P O'Relley 2536: Sgt Major Street will tell you he is buried in Renninghurst Cemetery. I saw his cross, he had recently been batman to Major Riggall: informant was McGee H 1075

His brother, Frank died of wounds on 15/03/1916 whilst serving with the Lincolnshire Regiment.
