William Lucas Briggs was born on 26th June 1883 at Newthorpe, he was the son of Emma Briggs born in 1850 at Tupton, she died in 1906 aged 56 yrs at the Workhouse, Higbury Road, Nottingham
In the 1911 census he is a lodger living at Nottingham Road, Giltbrook, Nottingham, he is shown as Luke Briggs 27 yrs a genreral labourer he is lodging with Henry Booth 39 yrs a coal miner and his family.
In 1916, William married Hannah Rebecca Ward (born 27th May 1888) they were married in on 25th March 1916 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, his wife brought two children to the marriage Albert Briggs Ward born 26th May 1914 and Edith Anne Ward born 29th December 1915, they went on to have 2 further children, Elsie Briggs born 27th March 1917 and Hilda Briggs born 23rd April 1918, who in 1911 lived at 48 Breach House, Eastwood. They had two children, Elsie (1917) and Hilda (1918). Hannah and her daughters later lived on Lyncroft, Eastwood.
Commencing 23rd December 1918 his widow was awarrded a pension of 33 shillings and 9pence a week.
His widow later remarried to become Hannah Rebecca Berry and lived at Lane End Yard , Giltbrook.
Private William Lucas Briggs enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Giltbrook he served with the 3rd Auxiliary Petrol Company, 315 Company Mechanical Transport, Army Service Corps,
He died at 56th General Hospital, Étaples on 20th June 1918 he is buried at Étaples Military Cemetery Grave Reference: LXVI F 4
