George Wilkinson was born in 1885 at Awsworth he was the son of William Wilkinson a stoker in a chemical works, born 1860 at Wadsworth Yorkshire, (he died aged 50 in 1910). His mother Rose Hannah Wilkinson (née Mason) was born in 1860 at Ilkeston.
They were married in 1883 and had 14 children, all born in the Awsworth /Kimberley districts. They were living at 169 Eastwood Road, Kimberley in 1901.
In 1911, Rose Hannah was living at Highfields, Wingfield near Cheterfield with her children Frank, John, Lily, Cyril and Amy.
George married Sarah Jane Hoult in 1905, (she was born 5th May 1884 Hucknall) and they had four children including William born 22nd November 1906, Nellie born 15th October 1908 and Dolly born 28th October 1913.
In the 1911 census George 26 yrs a coal miner is living with his wife at Waterloo, Pilsley near Chesterfield, his wife Sarah Jane 25 yrs they are living with their children, William 4 yrs and Nellie 1 year of age.
Private George Wilkinson enlisted at Mansfield serving initially (13978) in the Leicestershire Regiment. Later transferring to the Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France 1st April 1915, he was killed in action two months later on 3rd Jume 1915. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres, Belgium.
